This course is designed to prepare the dentist to incorporate moderate IV sedation into their dental practice. Participants will master the use of intravenous, intranasal, and other parenteral routes to produce a state of moderate sedation for their patients. The program consists of a minimum of 54 hours of didactic classroom training and direct participation in a 3–4 day clinical rotation.
In the clinical setting the participant will be administering IV sedation concurrent to dental treatment to a minimum of 20 adult patients as the sole sedation provider while receiving expert guidance. Ontario dentists are restricted to the use of a single benzodiazepine agent and usually we use the drug midazolam. High fidelity and low fidelity simulations are part of the program. Training and certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is included.
A three-four day clinical component
Students have one year to complete clinical after finishing the didactic component
For Ontario clinicals held at private practices; a RCDSO facility permit must be in place
DentalEd assists in setting up the practice and obtaining the required permit.
There may be an option to join with other students for group clinicals
Amity affiliated dentists often participate in group clinicals
Each student must provide a minimum of 20 patients for dental procedures while sedated
Examine the pros and cons of moderate sedation, followed by a discussion on preventing, recognizing, and managing associated complications.
Acquire the skills to safely and effectively administer moderate sedation in a clinical setting, considering abuse potential and occupational hazards.Demonstrate oral medication dosing, intravenous access, and other techniques as per certification requirements.
Discuss drug pharmacology, indications, contraindications, and adverse reactions for selected administration, emphasizing thorough evaluation of patients' appropriateness.Implement vigilant monitoring and chart-keeping for the safe delivery of moderate sedation.
Master the administration of selected drugs to dental patients in a clinical setting, with a focus on safety and efficacy.
Develop a comprehensive emergency management protocol for dental office emergencies, listing necessary drugs and equipment.
Understand advanced cardiac life support principles, demonstrating the ability to diagnose and treat emergencies related to unintended anaesthesia levels.
Acquire skills to manage a patient's airway using basic and advanced techniques.
Recognize, and manage dental medical emergencies in a leadership role.
Comprehend and adhere to provincial legislation and dental college regulations for correct practice standards and guidelines.
DDS/DMD degree and active dentistry license required for participation.
Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan dentists need at least one sedation assistant (RN, NP, RT, or MD) for practice clinical; BC dentists require two dental assistants, one certified in CDAAC or DAANCE.
Malpractice insurance (5 million liability) proof required before clinical rotation.
Current valid BLS CPR certification.
Students must have necessary equipment, emergency supplies, medications, and IV sedation sundries before clinical rotation, meeting RCDSO or governing college standards. DentalEd provides complete guidance through this process.

Dr. Gabriel Lacombe
Dr. Gabriel Lacombe, an esteemed Dental Anesthesiologist based in Ontario, is dedicated to elevating dental care through the application of advanced sedation methods. Serving as a guest lecturer at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Lacombe contributes to dental education by conducting courses on local anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation, and oral sedation, promoting the importance of gentle care. With practice locations in London and Sarnia, Dr. Lacombe specializes in pediatric care, addressing the distinctive restorative requirements of young patients.
Dr. Michael Saso
Dr. Michael Saso, a distinguished dental professional, graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 1987 and later earned a Diploma in Dental Anesthesia in 1990. Practicing dentistry in Ottawa from 1990 to 2020, he specialized in advanced pain and anxiety control techniques for adults. Dr. Saso made significant contributions to dental education, lecturing for the ODA and various Provincial and National Societies. Currently recognized as a Dental Anesthesia Specialist in Ontario, Dr. Saso is a Dentistry Instructor at the University of Toronto. Additionally, he serves as a Sedation and Anesthesia Facility Inspector for the RCDSO, providing anesthesia services to specialists in the Greater Toronto Area
Michael Dare
Michael Dare, an advanced life support paramedic and critical care RN, earned his degree from the University of Calgary. With a diverse background in ER, CCU, ICU, and PACU in large tertiary hospitals, as well as experience as a flight paramedic, his passion lies in teaching. Over three decades, he has imparted his expertise in critical care topics, adult and pediatric resuscitation, airway management, sedation, and ECG interpretation in both hospital and dental settings. As the CEO and founder of Dental Ed, Michael has trained over 400 dentists in IV moderate sedation across Canada.
